Log Building Fundamentals Workshop (Beginner Level)
June 7-8, 2025,
Wakefield, QC

In this two-day workshop you will learn and practice hands-on techniques to prepare and carve out logs to craft beautiful structures.

In beautiful Wakefield, QC (half hour from Ottawa/Gatineau), you will learn how to use a spud, draw knife, scribing tool, chainsaw and chisel to craft log buildings like cabins or saunas using traditional techniques.

The workshop is 16 hours long and includes professional instruction and hands-on time to practice the techniques.

The workshop also includes a lunch, dinner and bonfire and music on Saturday evening, and lunch on Sunday.

Students need to bring their own chainsaw and protective glasses. Other tools will be provided onsite. Looking forward to teaching you the fundamentals of log building so you can start crafting your own projects!

Scribing
 

A fundamental technique when setting logs on top of each other is to use a scribing tool so that each log is marked and ready to be set perfectly and seamlessly on the one below​​

Fitting the Log (Chainsaw and Chisel) â€‹

Here we see Marie and Daniel using a chainsaw and Solan using a chisel to remove the excess material so that the log fits perfectly onto the next one​​

Saddle Notch Technique
 

Solan is using a chainsaw to make cuts into a cedar log, creating a 'saddle' to set the log on top of the log below​​
